After the Massacre, the NRA Has Nothing to Say

An AR-15 was used in the Newtown killings

The massacre of  twenty children on Friday has not only left this country in shock and disbelief, it has created a new dialogue on the subjects of mental health care and gun control. Unfortunately, where there hasn’t been much dialogue is from the National Rifle Association. On twitter, they have been silent since the news of the shooting became known.

As of Sunday night, not a peep. An organization with the size and influence of the NRA, has had nothing to say about this mass shooting. Not even a condolence message…NOT EVEN A CONDOLENCE MESSAGE. You won’t find anything mentioning the tragedy on their website either. Trying to hide perhaps?

This Sunday morning, at least two of the political talk shows, Face the Nation and Meet the Press, offered invites to every Pro-Gun Rights Senator. Not one accepted the offer to defend their views. Not one of the thirty-one Gun Rights members felt comfortable trying to explain why a mentally unstable young man had the opportunity to fire guns of such power into the delicate bodies of six and seven year old children.

One Senator did talk to Fox News. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) apparently believes more firepower is the answer.

I wish to god she had had an M4 in her office

the Senator said of Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Hochsprung, who was killed in the shooting. Can he really believe this young woman could have unlocked the gun from where it was kept, aimed, fired and hit the target…before he gunned her down? It’s incomprehensible to me how these people always think the answer to gun violence is more guns.

Perhaps his comment was one reason the NRA has been silent. There is nothing they can say that makes any sense.

  1. … and apparently their Facebook page mysteriously vanished on Friday.

I am no fan of the NRA, and you are bang on — isn’t this their chance to offer condolences and show are open to a conversation? Apparently not.

Hopefully this tragedy will be a tipping point in the conversation on gun control.

  2. We can only hope. This has happened so many times before, but always with children a little older. If these tiny babies can help bring about a change, their deaths will have not been in vain.

  3. There was a rep from Gun Owners Of America or something on a talk radio station this morning selling the idea od arming every teacher.

So, the coackroaches have begun to show themselves.

    • Can you even imagine that in your worst nightmare? Raising a new generation with armed guards and armed teachers in their schools. This is terrifying.

      • While my step-father, who works in school safety and as a commissioned officer, believes that a retired or off-duty police officer in every school would certainly act as a deterrent, he states that even this will not stop it all.

  4. It is incomprehensible to me. I cannot understand how their PR spin folks decided to go the route of silence.

    • I can only assume they expected any comment made would be attacked. But not to at least offer a word of sympathy is inexcusable.
