Rich people get all the best stuff! If it’s not high-end, blinged-out smart phones, it’s getting a-list celebrities to perform at their birthday bashes. Now, added to their list of goodies, the overworked and well-to-do in China can get their very own wet nurses so they can keep a healthy supply of breast milk on hand. Not for their kids, mind you. It’s for them. Yup! Drinking breast milk is apparently all the rage for affluent adults over in China and reports are that they prefer their supply fresh from the tap.
Okay… um… wait. You know what? I think they can keep that one.
As many of us know, breast milk is considered highly nutritious and it’s a popular belief among the Chinese that, even for adults, it’ll cure a lot of what ails you. As such, there’s an increasing demand in the country for it, as they search out anything that can help hard working businessmen and women keep their bodies fortified so they can continue to toil away and stack that paper.
The demand for breast milk for adults is so high that women with full breasts can rake in a cool 20,000 yuan (Just over US$3,200) per month just to have some rich guy (Or gal, to be fair) suck them dry. Wait! I thought that worked the other way around.
Hard to believe when you consider the uproar that can arise when a woman whips it out in public in the US to breastfeed her own child.
Experts, however, are saying the health benefits of breast milk, while great for babies, aren’t all that they make it out to be for adults. In fact, nutritionists are saying, for adults, cow’s milk works just as well. Of course, it’s probably not as much fun to suck on a cow’s teat, though. Plus, I somehow doubt the cow would be as willing to let them.
Maybe I’m missing something…
As you would guess, authorities in the country aren’t looking too kindly on the trend, as they say the practice can be somewhat on the illegal side – something about adults paying women to suck on their boobies falling into the category of a sexual service. Go figure! Still, they can’t fully prevent it from taking place, since they say it’s difficult to make a case against those who engage in the practice.
They were still able to take some action, however. Regulators revoked the business licence of one company, Xinxinyu Household Service Company, in Guangdong, for offering breast milk to adults (With an optional wet nurse delivery service). More and more companies like Xinxinyu are shifting their focus from providing breast milk for babies, a lucrative and, for many parents, necessary service in China after the 2008 poisoned baby milk formula scandal, to rich adults because… well… MONEY!!!
In another case, a restaurant in Changsha had to discontinue its “Human Milk Dinner” menu after residents (probably the poor ones) complained about how they were treating women like dairy cattle. To be fair, though, sucking a stranger’s breasts at home can get boring. Sometimes you want to eat out. You know what I mean?
Speaking on behalf of the idle rich, an anonymous client of these breast milk services said he, himself, shelled out 15,000 yuan (Just under US$2,500) to have a wet nurse on standby at his home for a month. He admitted, though, that many are too shy to go the wet nurse route and preferred to get their breast milk supply from breast pumps, which, I guess, makes the whole thing a lot less weird.
As far as he was concerned, drinking breast milk was considered to be just a normal thing they do in his “circles”.
I guess “normal” is a relative term.
