Chinatown Dragon Fighters to the Rescue

If you’ve never been to Chinatown, no matter which one you visit, you can be assured that you will see things you never thought you’d see. Frogs in a bucket? Sure. Plucked duck hanging from a string in a window? Hell yeah. Chicken feet batter dipped and served up hot? Yes, Sir. Rescuers saving the life of a sex doll? Maybe in China. A man dragging his screaming wife down the side walk then chopping at her head with a cleaver? Only in New York baby.

Police, firefighters, and various eye witnesses state that late Sunday morning, 28-year-old Ming Guang Huang violently attacked his wife, 24-year-old Jinyia You on the streets of Chinatown. The commotion caught the attention of Canal Street shoppers and others. As if to prove to the world that he was completely off his rocker, Huang did this right in front of Engine Company 9, Ladder Company 6, the Chinatown Dragon Fighters. Big mistake Mr. Man.

“He pulls the cleaver out of his waistband and starts hacking at this woman, I rush him, I’m, trying to grab the cleaver, but he’s swinging.” said Firefighter Jose Ortiz. Ortiz and colleague James Trainor attempted to stop the attack. ‘He was not a big guy, only about 5-foot-5, but the cleaver made him a little taller,’ Ortiz said. In the end, it took three men to restrain Huang. He’s reported as having shouted, “She’s my wife!” while the firefighters struggled to control him.  Is there a place in the US where that is a valid excuse for chopping away and the skull and face of your beloved?

Jinyia You bolted from the scene as the firefighters subdued her husband. She would followed to a nearby restaurant where firefighters proceeded to monitor and bandage her wounds while waiting for the ambulance. She is currently listed in stable condition at a Bellevue Hospital. Huang was also treated for a laceration, one might harbor a bit of hope that he accidentally hacked off his offending hands, though that seems to be a bit much to hope for.

Huang is being held but at this time has not been charged.

  1. Knowing this area pretty well, you are correct…you never know what you will see. While Chinatown is definitely its own micro-world, this was a bit out of the ordinary. Wonder if he will use the “she’s my wife” defense in court.

  2. Yeah a meat cleaver stretches the limit of the “rule of thumb” defense even by 1700s standards.

  3. A meat cleaver? Ugh. I’m certain I’ve irritated the hell out of my husband on more than one occasion, but I don’t think he’s ever felt the urge to take a meat cleaver to my face. Which reminds me that I need to tell him he’s a pretty good husband, again.

    • Ha! You’re right Sarah. I think we’ve all done something to piss a partner off at one time or another, but it takes batshit crazy to bring out the hatchet and drag them screaming through a city whilst whacking away.

You tell your Mr. that we all love him for never chopping you to bits. The world would be a sh*tty place without you!

  4. so he went crazy? that’s the only possible reason right?

    • There can be no other explanation. Having been in abusive relationships in my life, I can honestly say that compared to this those men were slightly dysfunctional by comparison. I cannot imagine what happened that set him off. This is just bizarre and frightening.
