Hey! You wanna get laid? Have I got the place for you. This hotel manager I know pointed it out to me. It’s called backpage.com, and he trolls it daily to find out who might be selling her services in his hotel every night. Oh, he isn’t looking for ladies for himself. He’s married with a son, and it was actually his wife who told me about it. He’s checking to see who is using his hotel to sell her services that night. In an exclusive interview (in his back parking lot, no less), he told me a little about how it works.
Now let’s be clear. This isn’t just happening in Montgomery, Alabama. As recently as December 2012, a sixteen year old was rescued after being drugged and sold to paying rapists on the site. In New York State.
And when I discuss the manager trolling for ladies using his hotel, I’m not talking about profiling. I don’t mean that he’s checking for a certain type of woman. (Or, hell, for that matter men.) This isn’t some cop sitting by the roadside looking for people who match his checkboxes. He’s looking for particular individuals, since these ladies (and, yeah, it’s all women; he’s never seen a man) post their pictures and announce where they’ll be for the evening, with rates and times listed. Hell, some even take PayPal. Oh yes they do.
For obvious reasons, hotel managers frown on the practice. This particular manager has seen some arrests that made him want to take a shower. One woman had a basket of condoms sitting on the table like it was full of after dinner mints. Which is better, I suppose than not having them at all, but the image is rather nauseating.
Another (or maybe it was the same one) was smoking a crack pipe chatting up the arresting officers. She was in her mid fifties and charged three hundred dollars an hour. And, she assured them, she could get it, too. She told them with no coercion and after having been read her rights that she didn’t do black guys, because they wouldn’t pay that much. (I won’t even go into the logistics of the racism there. I’ll just leave them hanging for you to analyze on your own.) She was one of the women who took PayPal.
Purely aside from finding an evening’s companionship on a website, these guys can’t be thinking with the brain above their eyes. I mean… PayPal? Cincinnati’s Jerry Springer figured out years ago not to pay with checks. (In Springer’s defense, he would never have been caught if the check hadn’t bounced.) But if the paper trail from a check is easy to follow, the electronic trail through PayPal ought to be a blazing signal for any detective worth his or her salt.
And then there’s the fact that this isn’t some No Tell Motel we’re talking about here. It’s a respected establishment which prefers its guests to be families and tourists. (Hence the anonymous nature of the interview.) Sooner or later, the hookers will figure out this manager is wise to their antics and pick another locale with a less savvy leader. (I’m sure he can’t wait.)
But in the meantime, I’ll leave you with the knowledge that a University of Arizona study indicates that a rather high percentage of the things sold on backpage.com are escort services. And that there’s a YouTube video to help out the less-than-adept john. Shower’s the second door on your right as you go down the hall.
