So when is shit no longer shit? When it becomes a human…everybody knows that. Right?
In a jaw-dropping exchange during hearings in the Louisiana State legislature concerning the Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA), State Senator Mike Walsworth (R) was intent in finding the missing link. In this case, the direct evolution of E. coli bacteria into a human being. And I thought I missed a lot in biology class.
The law which was signed into law by creationist leaning Governor Bobby Jindal, permits supplemental materials to be used in teaching science. These materials were to be used specifically to target those pesky subjects that some members of the Republican Party have a hard time accepting…mainly evolution and global warming.
So during these hearings, the Senator was asking a Louisiana science teacher by the name of Darlene Reaves, if evolution can be proved. She said it could and proceeded to give him an example using E coli bacteria, and explained how samples were frozen and over years, other generations of the same bacteria strains had evolved. Got it? Apparently the Senator did not.
In a video from 2012 which has gone viral, as the teacher explains how the bacteria evolved, the Senator asks if it had evolved…into a person. A.PERSON. Can you imagine the pride you would have felt if you knew you had cast a vote for this man
A PERSON. It gives a whole new definition to “crawling out of the slime.”

what makes me laugh is that the senator thought he was the smart one, thought he was going to make the silly scientists and their crazy theories look stupid. and we thought there was bo justice in this world.

yes, it is joyful when smartasses become the laughee instead of the laugher. uh, except when it’s us.

I’ve now watched the video over and over again– mainly because I love to watch the woman’s face. I hope there’s a special place in Heaven (or your otherworld of choice) for high school science teachers who are called to the state legislature to teach remedial biology.

Yes, that look where she said back to him “a person?” Are you kidding me? She should be Teacher of the Year.
