It’s been said before, by many people, many times, but instead of inventing a new thing to prevent rape and unwanted touching, why not teach people how to treat other people with respect? The latest thing to keep leg-shaving ladies safe from “perverts”, are “full-leg-of-hair stockings”! There are so many problems with these stockings.
They’re marketed as being great for summer. Which means that you can wear your sexy short-shorts and your mini skirts that make you super sexually-assaultable but once you shimmy into your hair stockings, you’re instantly unattractive and nobody would ever think of you in that way. Never you mind that you’re wearing hot stockings during summer and when you cross your legs, you have an unable to be ignored need to scratch off those stocking because pointy, fake (real?) hair is covering your legs. And by the way, have you ever worn stockings with unshaved legs? Because, bad, itchy idea (Becky during a choir performance in middle school). And what about people who’re attracted to other people with hairy legs? How will these stockings help them?
Oh, China, I guess I can thank you for recognizing a problem, but let’s try some smarter solutions. Let’s try not blaming the assaultee and blame the assaulter for their actions. Let’s not try to top zapping lingerie, which actually seems vaguely empowering. Let’s not tell women to make themselves less mainstream attractive in order to ward-off criminals, maybe try an Ed Hardy shirt. Let’s condemn sexual assault, handsy-smooth-legs-loving perverts and rapists any chance we get and teach our children to respect every human the same.
