Jim Carrey has gone from talking out of his own ass to kicking it… Canadian boy next door turned stand-up comedian turned TV star turned Ace Ventura turned comedy mega star turned sometimes credible actor turned Jenny McCarthy dupe turned Emma Stone devotee turned occasionally working actor is doing weird crap. Yes, again.
Leaving alone why the hell there is a sequel to Kick Ass at all, and leaving alone why Carrey agreed to star in said sequel, all we need to know is that Carrey costars in the upcoming Kick Ass 2.
While the film’s other stars are starting the publicity road show, this weekend Carrey dissed the movie to his ten million twitter followers, saying he cannot endorse it due to its violence; Carrey says he did the film before Sandy Hook and has since had a change of heart.
I get the being disturbed by tragedy and violence, and yes we are Canadian and tend to be more gun shy about guns. And yes I think the Hollywood community lets themselves off the hook way too easy when it comes to their impact on gun culture in America. All good.
Carey had become vocally anti-gun over the last year. And I for one like it. My issue with Jim Carrey is this…. you read the script before you did it. When you accepted the gig, you knew the violence was there hell, look at even the commercial for the original, with superhero kids fighting… it’s called KICK ASS.
There have been endless gun tragedies, so why now? And why just before the film comes out? And why on twitter? And what happened to that mega-million dollar salary, by the way?
Oh – and apparently Carrey’s Kick Ass character is a born-again Christian who refuses to fire a gun. So isn’t that a good thing? This reeks of grandstanding… telling people a violent comic book superhero movie is, uh, VIOLENT, is not going to keep them away. But this news coverage may actually get the move some more buzz.
I like Carrey and his values, and still think this is a misstep. Now I would like to see him still support the job he accepted in good faith, and then do some good works with the piles of money he made from the flick… and that Mr Carrey would be kicking some (gun control loving) ass!
