In a completely rational move, Damien Wilkerson stabbed a dog to death for ripping his $3.78 shirt. He allegedly told police, “I ain’t gonna let no dogs or no n—ers punk me”. Usually I get very angry and sad when I read these stories in the news, but Wilkerson with able to add another emotion to the mix, perplexity. Clearly Wilkerson is a disturbed person to think that a dog is trying to “punk” him or show him disrespect by ripping his shirt, but I just can’t imagine what he was really trying to prove. You rip my shirt, you get stabbed. That will teach all the other dogs around here not to rip my shirt?
I can’t fathom the way this guy’s mind works. I can’t understand the mental pathways he takes from a ripped shirt to beating a puppy, that ran away and then ultimately killing its mother and throwing the dog in a trash can. How is that a legitimate course of action in anyone’s brain? How little respect do you have to have for living beings to come up with this idea? I’m glad laws about animal cruelty laws are being enforced and gaining notoriety, you’d think it might catch on. Add this to the list.
I wish I had some hope for the rehabilitation of this guy, but sadly, I think he’d have to have some pretty strong motivation to change from the inside and I don’t know if our system is up to that task. If you can be a dog killer/torturer and still be a multi-million dollar football star in this country, Wilkerson doesn’t really have a chance at change.
