Michael Wiener Slinging His Wiener in the Phillippines

I love living in New Mexico. Our beautiful mountains, the mild climate, the culture; it all suits me nearly perfectly.

I would be the last person to deny, though, that ours is an odd little state. Poor, empty, wild, and always fighting for our spot at the bottom of any list that seeks to quantify anything having to do with quality of life: education, employment, or health, well, we ain’t no Massachusetts, that’s for sure. Since our tiny state is best known as the site of the nation’s largest prison riot in history, none of it should come as a surprise.

We have more than our fair share of local political scandals. New Mexico politics only came into the 20th century sometime in the 1970s, so it should come as no surprise that we’re a bit, shall we say, behind the curve.

So Michael Wiener, Bernalillo County Commissioner, is only following the well-beaten path of the misogynistic elected officials who came before him. He last made the news a year ago, when he made some rape jokes (such a lovely way to break the ice with co-workers, yes?) to some of his co-workers. In spite of repeated requests that he step down, he held onto his job, said his mea culpa, and here we are today: new year, new scandal, same misogynistic attitudes.

This picture of Michael Wiener, visiting the Philippines at the time, surfaced last week, and wow, aren’t all us Bernalillo County residents just so damn proud?

I don’t believe that a person’s sexual behavior makes them unfit for most jobs, but is discretion really too much to ask? And are you really so out of touch with the high-tech world we having going on here that you thought that, because you were on the other side of the world, no one would know you were up to your eyeballs in hookers?

All rules of discretion go triple for any person named Wiener. I mean, really. You’re making it too easy, dude.

  1. This just proves that Weiners and public office just don’t mix.

    • Like we needed further confirmation, right? Ick.

  2. Classy. So beyond the growing evidence that all male politicians are morons, I think yes we have to ban anyone named “Weiner” from political office.

  3. This guy sounds like a real weiner, I mean winner. Ba-dum-cha!
