How many of us use “like” in a conversation? Has “you know” ever slipped past your lips? How about “seriously” or “just sayin’”? Well then, according the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, you’re annoying.
Don’t worry though. I’m annoying too. I’ve been guilty of doing the same.
Just sayin’.
But of all the words people find annoying, one has held top place for, like, three years. The word “whatever”.
No, seriously!
Marist, like, conducted their annual survey and of the 1,026 adults they interviewed, 38% put “whatever” as the word that irritated them most, you know? And, like, 20% voted for “like” and 19% for “you know”. Fourth and fifth place went to “just sayin” with 11% and ”seriously” which got 7%.
I, like, totally agree with “whatever” being in first place. I mean, like, “whatever” is, like soooo annoying, you know? I mean, seriously, the word’s rude and dismissive and when you think about it, you’re, like, really just blowing someone off when you use it. Just sayin’.
But I do think “seriously” deserved at least third place, maybe even second. I mean that word is, like, totally annoying and people need to seriously, like, stop using it.
But they didn’t survey me so, like, you know, whatever.

I use Like all of the time. I even annoy myself with it. But SERiOUSLY, I hate whatever.
