Hey, Republicans—I realize y’all are trying to distance yourself from that idiot Todd Akin and his views on “legitimate rape” and the magical properties of women’s bodies to prevent pregnancy when they find themselves victims of such, and I have some advice for you: Shut the hell up. Seriously, you aren’t doing yourself any favors.
Case in point: Pennsylvania Senate candidate Tom Smith, while insisting that he does not agree with Akin’s views, does state that he believes abortion should be banned, including cases of incest and rape. Because, you know, a baby born of incest or rape is really no different than any other baby born out of wedlock.
Hm. I guess he does look like a guy who would enjoy grandchildren, no matter how they were conceived.
What? What??? WHAT??? Yes, that’s right. When speaking to the Pennsylvania Press Club, Smith was asked by a reporter how he would handle it if it were his daughter or granddaughter who became pregnant as a result of rape or incest, and Smith said he had already had experience in just such a situation. But, mind you, there was no rape, no incest. So what was the situation? Having a baby out of wedlock. That’s right–his daughter had a baby without benefit of being married. Shocking, I know.
“Put yourself in a father’s position. Yes, it is similar.”
Really? Really??? REALLY, Mr. Smith??? You would feel the same if your daughter or granddaughter were pregnant from the result of consensual sexual activity as you would if she had been the victim of a RAPE? Wow. Just . . . wow.

I read about this yesterday and lost my shit.
I really, really want to ask him to clarify to my face. because either he’s implying that consesual sex out of wedlock is actually rape (akin to statuatory rape) and should be punishable by law or he’s implying that rape isn’t all that offensive after all. so which is it? pick a hand pick a hand!

It’s frightening, isn’t it? It’s like all these douche nozzles think rape is “no big deal.” Do they not realize men get raped, too? How big of a deal would that be?
I really cannot wrap my head around conservative rhetoric. They’re absolutely not interested in helping the people who are already here, but they’re going to insist that every pregnancy result in delivery of an infant? Um, those infants are quite likely to need some of those social programs the Republicans want to get rid of.

yes, that! I made the mistake of watching some RNC footage this morning and Condi was talking about helping those around the world in need. these are the same people who call any government assistance mooching. ARG!

I think that is the biggest thing for me. Shut the hell up about abortion, rape, and babies, and start telling me how you plan to help the people who are already living and breathing in this country. Especially if you plan to cut all safety net programs for the 80% of the nation that qualifies.
Maybe we should all have them read some dystopic fiction; the kind where the poor, trodden upon masses rise up against their power hungry, out of touch overlords.

The shortsightedness of the Republican party dumbfounds me, truly.
