Did you know there was a racism loophole? Apparently there is and an Oberlin College (Ohio) student has found it and applied it oh so liberally. See, the trick is that you can say and do as many outstandingly racist things as possible as long as you were joking.
Easy! Even kids can do it!
An Oberlin College student acknowledged posting anti-Islam fliers and racist cards around the campus of the historically liberal Ohio university earlier this year, saying he meant them as a “joke” to provoke a reaction, according to statements he made after being detained by campus security.
It looks like it worked too. He did provoke a reaction. I’m just not so sure the reaction was laughter. And, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the point of a joke to laugh? Or have I been doing this humor thing all wrong?
The (unnamed) student also took credit for the display of a large Nazi flag, which he also said he meant as a joke, and posting the face of Oberlin’s president onto a picture of Adolf Hitler.
Because we all know that there is nothing funnier than Hitler. Nothing but chuckles with that one. When one thinks of old Adolf, it’s not murder and slaughter and evil-to-the-core world domination, it’s hilarity! Fun times for all!
But wait! There’s more!
A series of postings and incidents over the winter caused an uproar at Oberlin, enrollment 2,900, one of the nation’s first universities to admit blacks. Black History Month posters were defaced, a “whites only” sign placed above a water fountain and a swastika drawn on a window. In early March, classes were canceled after a report of someone wearing what looked like a Ku Klux Klan-type hooded robe on campus.
And get this: police aren’t filing charges. I’m assuming because they got the joke? Because I just don’t get it. Though the student and his friend are both going through the school disciplinary system. And I’m sure those kids will get what is coming to them, which is, if you ask me, systematic brainwashing à la A Clockwork Orange wherein they are forced to learn what humor actually is. And then have a long sleepover in a concentration camp. Without food.
That seems fair right? Since he was only joking, I’d say that’s more than reasonable.
