As we’re officially in the holiday season, I’d like to open the discussion on Santa Claus. I’ve witnessed a trend of Santa Claus versus religion and it makes me sad. I feel like we need to keep in mind what Santa Clause can mean for all of us. It doesn’t have to be an exclusive club with us non-believers on the outside and it doesn’t have to be an evil beacon of consumerism. I hate that sometimes Christmas is sometimes a competition about who is the Christmasiest based on religion. I hate that non-religious people sometimes shun Christmas as not theirs as well.
My wish this year for Christmas is that Santa Claus can be a symbol for everyone regardless of belief. I know we’re seeing this trend more, but I’m inviting you to come along with me. I LOVE CHRISTMAS AND I DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS IT! I’m not ashamed to love it anymore. I don’t feel conflicted with my religious neighbors. I’m out as a Santa lover and I’m proud! I even love my tiny nativities with the baby Jesus. I want us all to come together to end the judgement. Nobody’s Christmas is better than anyone else’s Christmas.
As you celebrate this season, don’t think about other people ruining your Christmas because they aren’t doing it the right way, think about how you can make somebody’s Christmas better. Isn’t that what you’d like Christmas to be about anyway? Take a look at some letters to Santa to see what kids think about the season. Kids who’ve never heard of Santa are all, “Dang. That dude’s pretty cool. Thanks.” Santa is all about how you feel inside your heart (warm and b̶l̶o̶o̶d̶y̶ fuzzy).
