These days it seems people are only interested in paying for things they actually want. Take cable TV, many cable systems around the country are trying to incorporate ala carte programming where you only subscribe to channels you actually watch. Music has already gone that route. Album sales are in the toilet; why purchase twelve songs if you only like four of them. Enter the age of downloading singles. If you have more things in your cart, you pay more for it. Seems reasonable right?
What about health insurance? According to Dr. David Samadi, a medical contributor on Fox News, he believes that women should pay more for medical insurance because we have more organs. Yes, he said that. Dr. Samadi correctly states that women use the health care system more than men… with us having babies, practicing preventative medicine, and all that. His logic maintains that the health care system as it is now, where women pay a higher premium, is just fine. He also states correctly that women have ovaries, a uterus, and BREASTS. Who knew? He also noted that men only have a prostate. I guess he forgot about the testicles and penis.
Anyway, the reason for his somewhat dizzying explanation is the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in 2014, when insurance rates will no longer be based on gender. He feels it is unfair for MEN to pay the same as WOMEN for health insurance based on frequency of use and longevity. Again, we use the system more because we live longer. I wonder if he thinks it’s unfair for women to be paid less than men for doing the same job? But I digress.
I would like for him to clarify some questions I have about this. Say I have a male relative who needs a kidney and I am a perfect match. I am having a surgery so one point against me. But I will have one organ less, so shouldn’t I then get a break in my medical insurance rate? And what about the relative who received it? He had a surgery… one demerit for that, and he’s getting a third kidney. And he still pays less. How is that fair?
Also, while Dr. Samadi feels everyone should have catastrophic health insurance, he feels all doctor visit costs, as well as cat scans, x-rays, etc., should be paid out of pocket. Now doesn’t that seem like a good idea? Let’s have a show of hands of how many people would be willing to pay for a cat-scan. Listening to the doctor whine about how it wasn’t fair that men have to pay the same as women was a joke. As much as he stated he was not biased and not stating it as a man… well, he is a man and he was biased. His argument is ridiculous. After all the strides we have finally made in this country to have insurance companies pay for preventative health care, this moron wants to penalize women who use it. Better to ignore that lump in your breast than to get a mammogram. One which he would like you to pay for, thank you very much.
I only hope Dr. Samadi’s beliefs are not the prevailing attitude among the medical profession. It was bad enough when men looked at women like a piece of meat, now we are being judged by our organs.
