I normally watch American Idol when the show first starts up in the season. For me the auditions in the beginning pave the way for me to watch the rest of the episodes. I never really based my choice to watch or not watch on who the judges are…until now. Since this year’s lineup included Nicki Minaj, an “artist” I’ve never really connected with, I figured I wasn’t going to invest more than the time it took to watch the opening show. My husband shares this philosophy with me, which is why we are so compatible. Neither of us had high hopes for the show.
Then we watched. I remained skeptical. He, on the other hand, saw something I didn’t. He saw a genuine and invested person involved with the show. He saw connection. I saw pink hair. He commented on her taking moments to really talk to those that they didn’t let through. I saw fighting with other judges. He had an open mind. Clearly, mine was still very closed.
After the first show, we watched again and I could sorta see what he was saying. By being on a show, a granted a reality show, Nicki Minaj seemed real. Yes, she was outspoken and bite-y with Mariah Carey but when she would talk to a contestant who was there to really there to change their life, she spoke as though she was talking through her struggling to make it herself self. Not a diva, not someone who was at the right place at the right time, but a person who has had doors slammed in her face.
She seemed to show she cared. Really.
Now, my husband listens to her music and we discuss what type of judge she is compared to the ones before; Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, J-Lo…
Are we seeing something others are not? If she is being true to what she feels in her heart as a once hurting artist, could she bring a hope to a show that is on it’s last thread?

I’ve never watched AI (something I’m actually rather proud of– I’ve never watched the Bachelor, either), but I agree with your husband on Nicki Minaj. I don’t really want to, but I do. I see a woman who has worked her ass off to get where she’s at, and she’s not going to take crap from anyone (including Mariah, the diva, apparently). Although I might not be big on her music, it is a quality I admire in a woman.
