We tell our kids violence is never the answer. I know a few kids who have had to explain this little nugget of wisdom to their own parents.
“Use your words!”
“Words not weapons!”
Easy to say, but harder to do sometimes. It’s especially difficult when you find your wife in bed with another man. It has to be even worse when you know the guy because he’s your dad. What. What!? True story.
When Utah sheriff, Timothy John Brewer cooked up dinner for his bride Logan, and his father Corky, he had no idea that something else would be boiling over after dinner. First came drinks. Then came dinner. Then more drinks. Followed by disaster. Shortly after dinner, Brewer’s wife excused herself to put one of their children to bed. When she didn’t return promptly, Brewer, being the concerned guy that he is, decided to make sure everything was okay. It was then that he opened the door to the vision that will forever be burned into his amygdala . There, on his son’s bed, lay his father. Directly on top of his father was his very own wife. Say it with me, “Ewwwwwwww!”
What ensued was nothing short of a beat down. According to police reports, “TJ” Brewer admits that he “beat the fuck” out of his dad, Corky Brewer, the local fire chief. His wife told police that he “pistol whipped” his dad with multiple guns in the house. Eventually, the wife and the father left the house, the wife to her parent’s and the father to his own home. When the father returned home he was looking for a firearm which his WIFE decided to hide from him.
But, wait! There’s more. After being denied the firearm, Corky, the father, grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed HIMSELF twice, puncturing a lung and cutting his liver in the process. Obviously, Corky was unable to talk with officers at the time of the incident and was taken to the hospital. The action didn’t end there. TJ had a run in with his uncle, also a deputy, in the hospital parking lot. He proceeded to make threats that he wanted to kill his father, assaulted an officer, and reaked of booze. Imagine that.
“TJ” was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, two counts of domestic violence in front a child, assault on a police officer, intoxication, and disorderly conduct. Those charges have since been reduced to assault and assault against a peace officer, both misdemeanors. Both men have since resigned their respective positions.
We’ve seen a lot of really shitty parenting lately, but you just know the situation is FUBAR when even the judge gives you a sympathetic nod. According to court reports, Judge Lyle Anderson stated, “I understand why you would have been very angry on the night of your criminal conduct.” The younger Brewer manned up though and took full responsibility for his actions.
I was unable to reach the elder Brewer’s wife, Cindy, to discuss her feelings regarding the situation. This may be in part because I didn’t try to reach her. For the moment, until more is known, we’ll operate on the assumption that she’s a better person than I am. Personally, I’d have likely been packing my bags as they were taking him to the hospital. I can tell you with a fair amount of certainty, Logan would not be my favorite daughter in law.
